Apple App Store users far ahead of Google Play users in subscription spend / Digital Information World


Sensor Tower, a mobile intelligence company, revealed in their report that mobile phone consumers are paying more than ever to subscribe to different applications.

Year-over-year subscription revenue for non-gaming apps grew from $13 billion to over $18 billion. Of all that revenue, the bulk came from Apple’s App Store.

Google Play, on the other hand, only received nearly $5 billion.

Among all subscribed apps, the video sharing hub, YouTube, tops the list of both overall stores on Google Play as well as Apple’s App Store. While Google’s subscription service, namely Google One, was the top app on Google Play.

The majority of subscriptions come from the United States, which contributed more than $566.5 million to YouTube out of the $1.2 billion generated in total.

While consumers of Apple products spent most of their time subscribing to different apps, Google Play saw the biggest increase in its year-over-year growth. Apple’s increase was only 31%, while Google’s was 78%.

In terms of most subscribed apps, YouTube was followed by popular online dating app, Tinder. Surprisingly, Japanese webtoon app Piccoma managed to get third place on the list.

Other major apps include Disney+ and HBO Max. These two apps are famous for their entertainment and multimedia distribution. The popular live streaming app, Twitch, also made its way into the top 10 list.
