Franco named MVC Defensive Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS- Senior Georgina Franco was named Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performances against Murray State and Illinois State last week.

“I’m very grateful and I think it’s really cool,” Franco said. “My hard work is paying off and I can see my growth.”

In a week the Salukis had two shutouts and two wins, Franco was a key contributor for both sides in both games. Thursday night against the Racers, the elder played 90 minutes in a game where the SIU limited the opposing offense to three shots on goal and shut out Murray State, 1-0.

Franco then made the difference both offensively and defensively in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Illinois State. The San Diego, Calif. native played 76 minutes and helped hold the Redbirds off the scoreboard and just two shots on goal.

In the 66th minute, Franco sent a ball deep past the Redbirds defense to set up Liz Brecthel’s winning goal. The assist was the first of his career.

“During the game, he [assist] was really intense,” Franco said. “But now it’s definitely a memorable moment.”

It is Franco’s first Defensive Player of the Week honor, and the team’s second this season with Paris Walsh win it earlier in the season.

Southern Illinois (8-3-3) will visit Valparaiso Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in its next game.
