PUNE Pimpri-Chinchwad Police have filed a complaint against a mobile number owner for misusing the photo of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Commissioner Rajesh Prabhakar Patil and demanding money from businesses through e-commerce platform vouchers.

A complaint about this was filed by the head of the PCMC, Nilkant Dhondiram Poman, 54 years old. The phone numbers that incorrectly used the photo of the PCMC commissioner are currently under investigation by local police.

“The defendant contacted corporators and made demands. The corporators spoke with the commissioner about the demands. PCMC officials realized what was happening and filed a complaint through their IT cell,” said Inspector of Police Dr Sanjay Tungar from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Cybercrime Cell.

The accused is suspected of having imitated commissioner Patil in speaking with the targeted corporals. He used Commissioner Patil’s image as his WhatsApp display image, officials said.

The accused called three corproators including Ajit Gavhane, Ambarnath Kamble and Lakshman Saste via WhatsApp calls. He also initiated conversations with another person named Santosh Jadhav. He applied for gift cards from a widely used e-commerce platform as financial aid.

A case under Sections 419, 420, 468, 469 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 66(c) and 66(d) of the Information Technology Act has been filed at Pimpri Police Station.
