San Francisco: Tech giant Apple has informed developers that it will soon start enforcing a new App Store rule that requires titles with account creation tools to also offer deletion options in the application.

Detailed in an update to Apple’s developer website, the App Store guideline 5.1.1 requires that apps with account creation capabilities also provide users with the ability to delete said account in the app, AppleInsider reports. .

“If your app doesn’t include important account-based features, let people use it offline. If your app supports account creation, you should also offer in-app account deletion,” indicates the directive.

The new rule is expected to cut down on cumbersome account deletion features that in some cases are designed to retain user information, according to the report.

Some apps require account holders to complete a request form on an external website or contact a customer service representative, he added.

Apple urges developers to review relevant laws that may require retention of certain types of data.

As usual, the company has asked app makers to make it clear what kind of information apps collect, how they collect it, how it’s used, and how it’s stored. Other data-related practices are explained in the App Store guideline.

The iPhone maker introduced Guideline 5.1.1 at the Global Developer Conference in June, and the rule is expected to go into effect on January 31, 2022.
