Seven runners are set to go for the William Hill Stayers Hurdle Top Price Guarantee Handicap Chase (15:10), the most valuable contest on Monday’s card in Taunton with a total prize pool of over £15,000.
The Two Amigos (154) appears to hold primary claims based on Timeform’s weighted ratings. A likable and consistent genre, The Two Amigos did little harm in five starts last season, producing their best effort filling second place in the Welsh National. Granted, he hasn’t been in quite the same form this term, but the way he trained at Exeter last time out suggests he’s on his way back and a BHA rating of 130 is very indulgent to judge on the choice of its form. For context, the Two Amigos are now 12 pounds lighter than when they hit the frame at Chepstow last season.
The 13 year old Dawson City (148) finished one place ahead of The Two Amigos when third at Exeter. Last time. He was still behind there before gaining several places on the final circuit as others tired, eventually passing the post 10 lengths from the winner. Dawson City can run from the same mark here and shouldn’t be underestimated, although his best days are probably behind him.
The opposite is true of Some details (150) and Hill of Dreams (146), two young horses who arrive here on the backs of a victory.
Some details showed a good attitude to get off the mark on the fences on this course three weeks ago, finding plenty on the run-in to land the spoils from a length and a quarter. He’s only 5 pounds heavier in the weights here and the extra distance promises to bring out the best in him. A complete stayer, he seems sure to give another good account now that he has launched his hunting career.
Revels Hill’s recent victory was also achieved at this track, showing improved form to challenge a BHA mark of 122 in convincing fashion. Granted, his jumps weren’t flawless, but he showed a willful attitude to shoot flawlessly after the last, eventually winning by four and three-quarter lengths with a bit in hand. Still low mileage on the fences, Revel Hill will be accommodated by the increased travel here and remains the one to keep on the right side from a mark just 7 pounds higher.
The field is completed by Achille (149?), Wandrin’s Star (145) and Minellacelebration (143+). This trio have all struggled for form recently, although Achille was in the form of a well-handicapped horse when he was fourth in the last Welsh National race in December. He has disappointed twice since but is not one to be ruled out if revived by the application of blinders.
Timeform analyst’s verdict:
Hill of Dreams going in the right direction and can follow the success of last month’s course. The Two Amigos and Some Detail assess the main dangers.
