What to watch out for in WPIAL sports on December 30, 2021: closing the books of a hectic 2021 year

Wednesday, December 29, 2021 | 6:32 p.m.

Welcome to the last day of high school sports in 2021.

It took a long time to get started this year.

Due to a closure imposed by Governor Tom Wolf, the high school winter sports season was “on hiatus” from December 12, 2020 to January 7, 2021.

2021 was a year of getting back on track after the global covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc in 2020.

While there have still been a few breaks here and there and the protocols are still very real, the hope is that this year’s first step leads to a bigger second step in 2022.

Holiday hoops end

Holiday tournaments end on Thursday.

Some of the men’s tournaments that are ending include Deer Lakes, Greensburg Salem, Kiski Area, Laurel Highlands, Shady Side Academy and Trinity.

Girls’ holiday tournaments hosted by WPIAL schools that will end on Thursday include Latrobe, Laurel Highlands, Mapletown and Shady Side Academy.

There are also several non-section girls and boys basketball games to wrap up the year on Thursday.

The last kick-off of 2021 will be the Jeannette game at Greensburg Salem, which is set to start at 8:15 p.m. to wrap up the Greensburg Salem tournament.

Powerade Finals

Day 1 and the prelims and quarterfinals matches are on the books for the Powerade 2021 wrestling tournament.
